Kitty Cat

Sitting in the house, out of no where comes the sound of "Meow". I look for a cat, thinking that is under the house stuck. I find it out on the front porch. It takes a leap off the porch, running to
hide. It is a very small gray tabby. I put some chopped up ham on the front porch. It ate it... I think. So that night as I carry groceries in, I leave the door to the back porch open. Later while getting a late night snack, I hear a "meow". Kinda sounded troubled. I go out to the back porch to find this Kitty Cat. While out there the Kitty is quite. I go back in the house and I hear "meow meow". After play this game for 30 minutes, I turn the lights off....get a flashlight and the search is on. I found it and picked it up thinking that I was going to get scratched or bitten, it cuddles and acts like it wanted it's momma. I held it for a few minutes, took it out the front door, set it down, went to go get it some milk. The cat took off like it had been scared. I went around the house....no where to be found. I gave up. Monday morning, drove to work about 6 miles from home. I cut the engine off.
What did I hear? "Meow Meow" ! I said out loud," YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING!"
I don't have time to take it home. So I raised my hood and this is what I saw. To make this story short at the end, 2 friends of mine came over to my truck. Got the kitty out. It had shinged whiskers on the right side of its face, and some of the hair on it's back paw. Now he has a new home and a new name "Rascal". Last I heard of him, He was doing Great!

I was asked to photograph the progress of a local Habitat House. I took on the job with no hesitation. I am going to share some of the photos with you. It is so amazing how many it takes to build a house. Then it is mind boggling the number of people that volunteers. This program is one of the best.

Morel Mushrooms

While mowing the yard yesterday, for the first time of the season, I found Morel Mushrooms. So I stopped the mower, ran to get the camera. There were a few, 8 or so, hoping for more to show up today.
They popped up out of old rotten roots of a tree. I not going to eat these. As I researched the mushrooms, come to find out that there are False Morels, and they are poisonous. But these in my yard are safe.

Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) consists of licensed amateurs who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and equipment for communications duty in the public service when disaster strikes.

A Net is when all operators report to one person in charge, which is called Net Control.

Operation in an emergency net is little different from operation in any other net, requires preparation and training. This includes training in handling of written messages--that is, what is generally known as "traffic handling.

Today I was involved in an ARES Drill. It covered 8 of the North East Counties in Tennessee. A Ham Operator was placed in the ER in every Hospital. They reported on 2 meter radio to ARES Net Control, telling how many ER beds that were available. I was at the Civic Auditorium in Kingsport. Our job was to pass messages that were handed to us, by Sullivan Co Emergency Management Agency. We passed the message by 2 meter simplex ham radio, to another station. This Station had HF capabilities. HF is High Frequency Band for making a long distance communications. They were to pass the message to Nashville. The day before the contact was made. But today the weather changed and different time of the day, so the contact didn't make it.

All in all, they said we did great. This was a Trial Drill, April 30th will be the Big Drill, Wish us LUCK!!!

Iron Lung

Iron lung is an airtight metal tank that encloses all of the body except the head and forces the lungs to inhale and exhale through regulated changes in air pressure.

I saw this today and just had to take a picture of it. Can you even image having to live in this metal tube.

The first modern and practical respirator nicknamed the "iron lung" was invented by Harvard medical researchers Philip Drinker and Louis Agassiz Shaw in 1927. The inventors used an iron box and two vacuum cleaners to build their prototype respirator. Almost the length of a subcompact car, the iron lung exerted a push-pull motion on the chest.

In 1927, the first iron lung was installed at Bellevue hospital in New York City. The first patients of the iron lung were polio sufferers with chest paralysis.

Bays Mountain Park

Bays Mountain Park is a 3,500 acre natural preserve, established in 1971.
The Park is owned and operated by the City of Kingsport.

There are various facilities including large outdoor animal habitats for wolves, bobcats, otters, deer, and other animals native to this region. It also has a 44 acre lake, and a nature center/museum. There are 25 miles of hiking trails through vast forestland. The nature center houses a planetarium with a 40 foot diameter dome. The park offers public as well as school programs.

It was the place I would go with my dad, on Saturday Morning, to get parts for the Lawn Mower. Mom and I would go get canning supplies here. On the way home from school I would walk through to the back door for a cold drink of water out of the fountain.

I have been working at this school for 14 years. Kingsport City Schools rarely lets out for snow. All the surrounding school systems let out yesterday at lunch. We got 1 to 3 inches so far tonight, with temp dropping to 12 degrees. Dreading to go to work in the morning with the wind chill being below 0. BBBbbrrrrr!

This Snowman was made by kids before going into school several years ago. I dressed him up in my vest and let him hold my sign.

We have ground hogs living under our smoke house. I caught them sitting on the steps. I tried to get closer for a better shot....guess what, they took off. So a cropped picture is all I got.

Showing a few of the steps in making the antenna. Here the coax is held in place on the plastic pipe with a wire tie and tape. The coax is split and bringing out the copper braided wire.

Radio direction finding is used to find sources of interference to any form of wireless electronic communications, including broadcast and two-way radio, television, and telephones. It is also used to track missing or stolen cars and other property. Search and rescue workers use it to find persons in distress. Emergency Locator Transmitters in downed aircraft are tracked with RDF techniques. As a game Ham Operators call it Fox Hunting.

Sculpture Walk

This one reminds me of an antenna that someone has talked on way too much and it just melted, then laid down. Well that is from a hams point of view.

BLACK ICE

This is my first blog entry without picture. So I will try to paint one with words.

I got home last night around 11:30 pm, with misting rain and temps in the mid 20's. With the cold temps that we had for 2 days had everything freezing. All this caused black ice build up. Turned on the police scanner and it had already started. First there were cars slipping here and there, and running into everything. Second it was muli car pile ups. Then the Police were dispatched out to the wrecks, not getting there because they couldn't go. Fire Trucks were having the same Bad luck. All major roads were getting impassable because of the ice and vehicles blocking and the pile ups. Then they call the salt truck workers in. They couldn't get to the garage, to get the salt trucks out. Then I heard that there were 18 wheelers jack-knifing here and there. Ems were having the same problems themselves. Wreckers were refusing to get out (don't blame them at all). Finally the salt trucks were getting salt out. This went on for hours, I got tired and went to bed around 3 am. I got up this morning at 9 am, the surrounding counties were still having problems. The insurance companies will have fun this week.

This morning, on Weather Bug, it said the temperature was 4.3 degrees. It gives me a good ideal how to dress for work every morning. Great site.
As I got in to my truck the temperature was 2.3 degrees. Thank goodness it started with out hesitation.
At the State of Franklin Bank, downtown the temperature was 3 degrees.
Tonight it is going to get colder. It has been several years since it has been this cold here.

Lucky Horseshoe

To bring good luck, the horseshoe must lost by a horse and be found by you, with the open end facing your way. You must hang it over the door with the open end up, so the good fortune doesn't spill out.

This horseshoe was on the out building when we moved here, and it is luckily still hanging.

Lynn Garden

This sign leads in to the community that I grew up in. Lynn Garden was unincorporated, so in the late 80's it was annexed by the Kingsport City. Now it is in the city limits. The residents have all the good and bad things that go along with living in a city.

This Shopping Center in Kingsport is an childhood friend. It sits on Lynn Garden Drive. As my mind drifts back many years ago, I remember many shopping trips here. Most trips were made in a automobile, but I also walked here and rode my bike. Krogers was in the store behind the sign, and SuperX was the drug store. Grants, W.B.Greene, and a Barber Shop is what I can recelect as a small child. Later other grocery stores, World of toys, Eckerds, Freds, and a hobby store called Parkway Plaza Home.

Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail

While out taking pictures, I came up on these monuments that I didn't knew that existed.

The Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail begins at Long Island of the Holston in Kingsport, near the site of the Netherland Inn, the nation's only registered historical site which was both a stagecoach stop and a boatyard. Boone and his group of ax men met on Long Island on March 10, 1775, to blaze the trail through 200 miles of Virginia wilderness to the Cumberland Gap.

This sign stands in front of 4 churches that are in a semi circle that leads down to Church Circle.
Church Circle is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. At Christmas time Kingsport decorates the evergreen tree with lights, that is in the middle of the circle. Between the Churches and the circle there is a Nativity Scene.

Kyarn Birds

Kyarn-pronounced just like it is spelled. This is what we called them when we were growing up.
Carrion is the correct name for it. It means rotten dead animal. I am glad for the buzzard to take care of carrion.

One-on-one, a Black Vulture can quickly be dominated by the slightly larger Turkey Vultures rarely travel alone. Flocks of Black Vultures can quickly take over a carcass and drive the more solitary Turkey Vultures away.

Fort Patrick Henry Dam

Fort Patrick Henry is named after the colonial fort, also known as Long Island Station, that was established nearby at the site of present-day Kingsport, Tennessee. The dam was built primarily for hydropower.

Construction of Fort Patrick Henry Dam began in 1951 and was completed in 1953.

The dam is 95 feet high and stretches 737 feet across the South Fork of the Holston River.

The generating capacity of Fort Patrick Henry Dam is 59,400 kilowatts of electricity.

The reservoir behind the dam is 872 acres, 10 miles long and 37 miles of shoreline and features steep bluffs and only a few coves. Water level fluctuates between 1,263-feet (full pool) to 1257-feet (minimum pool) depending on rainfall and downstream needs.

Child's Play

I work at a local elementry school, in Food and Nutrition Services. We had a Christmas Party and it was a blast. Around 70 people showed up. We had great food and wonderful entertainment.

Living Waters Trio was the gospel group that was the main entertainment. Then an employee, his wife, and a few others sang Christmas gospel. Children joined in and sang Traditional Christmas, fun to sing along songs. Then we had a young lady to sing a beautiful ocapello
Christmas song. I would say that we got our moneys worth but it was all FREE.

The food was awesome, fried chicken, green beans, corn, baked beans, slaw, chicken salad casserole, and chestnut ridge bbq. Of course there are many more dishes, just to many to mention. And the deserts were so good and the picture in this entry is homemade cookie the I like to call Child's Play.

Fountain of Lights and Foam

About 4 years ago as we was on a Geocaching hunt, we happened up on this fountain. Someone had put soap in in.
I myself had never seen foam in a fountain. It was amusing to me.
Bubbles, bubbles, and more bubbles.
Look at the pretty colors.
The foam was so light it floated. I was like in my second childhood.

This is a Cave located in Kingsport, I have heard of it for many years. If it has a name I am unaware of it. A few years ago while my son was setting a geocache (www.geocaching.com), we went exploring.

This is my friend Earl at the entrance of the cave.

This is a small room off to the left when you get down to the bottom of the cave.
Earl and my son John with graffiti on the walls of the cave. No dates so have no ideal how long it has been there. There were numerous items of trash in there. A water heater sticks out in my mind that was left there.
Coming back out of the cave. It was a hard climb almost as bad as coming in.
The area is full of caves. They are just on private property and to small to go in.
They are public caverns in the area: Bristol has Bristol Caverns www.bristolcaverns.com/, Blountville has Appalachian Caverns www.appalachiancaverns.com.

Red Tail Hawk

Right before leaving my Post at school, I had a visitor. I was so hoping that I could get a picture before he (or she) was on his (or her) way. I also over heard a parent telling about when the hawk took a squirrel. That would have been neat to see.

Icicles

Icicles form when the air is around freezing level. The areas not in direct sunlight will be cool and below freezing, while the sun melts ice and snow on more exposed surfaces. The melting water dripping down along edges refreezes in the cool air, forming a column of ice - the icicle. When droplets of melted snow drip down an icicle, they release small amounts of heat as they freeze. Heated air travels upwards and helps slow down the growth of the icicle's top, while the tip is growing rapidly. The water will run down the sides of the formation evenly in a thin film and freeze on the way down. This sort of freezing, thin film of water is what leads to the eventual icicle shape.

Eastlawn's Candlelight Remembrance

Over 15 thousand candles were placed through the East Lawn Funeral Home & Memorial Park and lit at dusk. The drive thru the cemetery was totally breath taking. The snow we received today added to the Christmas Spirit.

Red Berries in the Snow

A Surprise Snow hits Kingsport. It caused numerous wrecks. Which in turn kept Kingsport Police, Kingsport Fire Dept., EMS, Wrecker Drivers and Hospital personnel hopping.
Here at the home front it was quite peaceful, just like the Red Berries in the Snow.

Kingsport Dedicates Veteran's Memorial

The Kingsport Veterans Memorial was dedicated on on Veterans Day, which is located in front of J. Fred Johnson Park on Fort Henry Drive between the old Highway Patrol Building and Indian Court.

The memorial is of red, white and blue granite. A white granite plaza contains six 7-foot-tall blue granite tablets, one for each war from World War I to Operation Iraqi Freedom, with two from World War II. The tablets display the names of 370 fallen soldiers from Kingsport on one side and a map of the theater of operations on the other. Over 550,000 pounds of granite was used in the construction of the memorial.

The memorial includes a centered U.S. flag, which will remain lit at all times, benches, earth berms, and two walkways leading up to the plaza from each side that include the names of famous battle sites, such as Berlin, Guam, Normandy, Tet and Kabul.

On either side of the walkways are rows of granite pavers — the
“Walk of Honor” features 1,728 red granite pavers bearing the names of veterans, living or dead

The 66th Annual Kingsport Christmas Parade kicks off when the Santa Train pulls in to the Train Station. Early that morning the Train has carried Santa, lots of Volunteers, and 15 tons of goodies thru 3 states. The train makes many stops along the way in rural communities to give out the goodies to all that come to see Santa on the Train.

Old Kingsport Presbyterian Church

Old Kingsport Presbyterian Church was organized 1820 as the
Boat Yard Congregation. It predated the incorporation of Kingsport
by two years. In 1846, Dr. Frederick A. Ross built the church on
his property at his expense, utilizing the labor of his slaves-who
were members. He served as pastor from 1826 to 1852. In 1851,
Dr. Ross deeded the church property to the New School General
Assembly of the Presbyterian Church. The church moved in 1953
from near Netherland Inn to land donated by Octavia Patton.

Ward's Feed Store

This store has been in the heart of downtown Kingsport since 1946, when J. E. Ward opened it. He worked at the place until just recently, family members say. Too frail now, the store is in Allen Ward's care, and he is carrying on the family tradition without many changes, although times have indeed altered the products the store carries for farmers. About the time World War II was heating up, J.E. Ward took a chance. He decided to manufacture his own horse feed and named it Ward's Sweet Feed. The sweet feed is still made the same way, manufactured around the corner from the store in the Ward Feed mill. The feed store carries a range of seeds (mostly in packages, whereas in the old days, you would have scooped them out of wooden drawers). Some of today's seeds are considered heirloom in the North, like half runner beans, whereas 60 years ago, and even today in East Tennessee, they are just half runner pole bean vines. One thing, though, has remained consistent down through time. At Ward's Feed Store, you can find the right stuff and the right answers.
That may be what keeps the store in business.

This Katydid visited me one morning as I was sitting in my truck eating breakfast. I enjoy when nature sends me company.

They produce sound by raking a file on the base of their left forewing with a scraper on right forewing. The file is a modified vein with file-like teeth. As the insect closes its wings the scraper is raked over the file. The frequency of their sound increases as the scraper more rapidly rakes the file. When necessary, they can increase the volume by slightly raising their forewings, forming a small cavity in which the sound resonates and is amplified. Our hearing is not sensitive enough to hear their entire melody because their ultrasonic range extends above the 20 kHz upper limit of our hearing! They apparently achieve these high frequencies by straining the scraper against the file in such a fashion that when it breaks loose and glides down the file it is under greater pressure and moving significantly faster. http://msucares.com/newsletters/pests/gloworm/2008/glow0508.pdf
